The Civil Governor was the highest administrative position of the governorate (guberniya). The collection of the governor's chancellery, which represents only a small portion of the chancellery’s original body of documents, includes records on various governmental activities, as well as data on economic, social and religious issues which were brought before Russian officials.
Among other materials, this relatively small collection contains files related to the appointment of local officials and investigations into cases of corruption in the administrative apparatus; files documenting the issuance of certificates of political reliability to various persons; papers documenting investigations into the distribution of forbidden literature and on cases of alleged assistance to Polish insurgents; and documents on the modification of the internal administrative borders of the governorate.
Only one of the collection's files includes Jewish-related information: complaints issued by the Jewish residents of Vistytis against the military officer Major Sigelsky.

The documents from the Chancellery of the Civilian Governor of Augustow were kept in the Belarusian Central State Historical Archives in Grodno until 1957, when they were transferred to the Lithuanian Central State Archives in Vilnius. The collection is incomplete and does not reflect the whole office work of the chancellery.
