The collection of the Chancellery of the Governor of Suwalki includes materials which reflect a wide range of social and political activities.
It contains the chancellery's correspondence with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the governor and vice-governor of Suwalki and other officials. It also includes circulars from the police department and the governors of Warsaw and Suwalki with reference to the suppression of revolutionary activities and decrees from the governor of Suwalki on the activities of the county custody. Other files refer to such topics as the issuance of foreign and internal passports, immigration and emigration, foreign visitors and police surveillance.
Some papers – correspondence, statistical information and other documents – refer to the Jewish residents of the Suwalki region. The collection includes files which refer to synagogues, the election of rabbis and Jews expelled from the governorate.
The collection also includes appeals and complaints by Jews about the actions of Russian officials and appeals for certificates of political loyalty submitted by Jewish residents of the governorate.
Other Jewish-related papers include data on Jews accused of trading and distributing banned literature, espionage and cooperation with the German troops, smuggling and taking part in revolutionary activities (these materials include lists of Jewish activists put under police surveillance).
- Archival history:
