A Jewish community in Narva did not exist before the last decades of the 19th century. Artisans and demobilised soldiers settled in the town from the 1860s. A Jewish prayer house was granted approval in 1877 and established in 1884. Other communal institutions were established in subsequent years.
After Estonian independence, the Jewish community of Narva joined the system of Jewish cultural self-government; it functioned until the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940.
