- Archival history:
- The materials constituting the current collection were acquired by the Central State Historical Archive of Estonia, predecessor of the current Estonian Historical Archives, in 1947. In 1954 certain parts of the collection – condolence letters for the death of Leiser Zelmanovich, receipts and other documents – were destroyed.
- Administrative/biographical history:
-
The merchant and businessman Leiser Zelmanovich (1862-1934), a native of Siauliai, moved to Tartu with his wife Rachel and his brother Hirsh (1869-1922) in the late 19th century. He became a prominent member of the Jewish community there, serving as a member of the board of the Jewish Cooperative Bank of Tartu and as chairman of the local Jewish community.
Leiser and Hirsh Zelmanovich owned the first cinema in Tartu and ran printing and other businesses.
Leiser's son Reuven became the owner of the family business after his father’s death. He was arrested by the Soviets in 1940.
