The founder of the joint-stock company D. Mirwitz and Sons, David (Davet) Sholom Mirwitz, was a native of Lithuania. He settled in Tartu in 1872, where he founded a retail business and owned real estate. In interwar Tartu, the firm specialised in selling household and lighting goods.
The firm was nationalised after the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940. Two of David Mirwitz's sons were arrested by the Soviets, exiled eastward and died in exile.
