- The collection contains letters from communities to higher governmental authorities (1944-61). There are also materials describing Jewish communities in the provinces of Uzbekistan, and cities including Tashkent, Fergana, Margilan, Kokand, Bukhara, Andijan, Namangan, Katta-Kurgan and Kermina, and records about the Jewish autumn and spring holidays celebrations indicating the number of worshippers and their sex and age; ways of baking and selling matzo; amount of donations (1946-50, 1961-86); number of synagogues and their attendants; provision of religious services by synagogues: funerals, weddings, circumcisions; and supply of kosher products (1976-79). There are also documents about restored synagogues in Namangan, Shakhrisabz (1960), Karshi and Termez (1963) and active synagogues of Tashkent and the number of their parishioners. Among the papers there are minutes of the community representatives' general meetings and clerics of Bukharian Jews society in Tashkent under the leadership of Rabbi Boris Farajev (Haham Perez) (1959-60). There is a selection of documents on the community activities of Tashkent city: data about European Jews at the synagogue at Champion Street, among them a hand-written table calendar with Jewish holidays (1962–76); about Bukharian Jews at synagogues at Chkalov Street 9 and Sagban 3, minutes of community meetings (1963) and information about the article on income and expenditure; about donations; and about a visit to the synagogue on Sagban Street 3 by representatives of the Israeli Embassy (1963). Among the documents there is a registration certificate of Bukharian and European Jewish communities in cities including Tashkent (1953–56, 1960, 1963) and Margelan (1966).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Council for Religious Affairs was formed on the basis of the USSR Council of People's Commissars' resolution of 19 May 1944, with the purpose of monitoring the implementation of laws and decrees of USSR government in the Uzbek SSR relating to religious communities of various faiths and sectarian organisations within the republic, and to monitor the number of prayer houses, churches, mosques and synagogues.
