The collection includes directions and reports as well as administrative correspondence with institutions and individuals, including the projects of the People's Commissariat of Nationalities (Narkomnats) of Turkestan ASSR and regional national departments since 1918, decrees on the schools of national minorities (Armenian, Ukrainian and Jewish) having a significance for Turkestan (1919); Narkomnats Report (1919) about the opening of 10 central national departments: Uzbek, Turk, Kyrgyz, Tatar, Azerbaijani, Persian, Ukrainian, Jewish, Armenian and native-Jewish.
It also includes information about Skobelev's Jewish community, indicating the number of members and the nature of community's activity (1919); information about Jewish religious holidays, handed over by the Central Jewish Department to Narkomnats (1919); statements by Jews about employment at Narkomnats (1919); a decree by the local council deputies of Auli-Ata city and petition of cancellation the resolution about the expulsion of the Auli-Ata synagogue society from its premises (1918); informational reports regarding native Jews inhabiting the Turkestan region; statistical data on nationalities of the regions including Syr-Darya, Zalin, Semirechye and Samarkand (1919).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The National Commissariat of Turkestan was founded by the decision of the 5th Congress of Soviets of Turkestan Republic from 30 April 1918. Its duties were implementation of the Soviet government's ideas among nationalities inhabiting the territory of the Republic in their native language and collecting statistical data on nationalities. It was abolished on 14 July 1922.
