Administrative/biographical history:
Franz Moses Philippson (1851-1929) made a brilliant career in banking and finance. He founded the Banque F.M. Philippson et Compagnie in 1905, of which the current Banque Degroof is the successor. Franz Moses Philippson played an active part in many societies. As a philanthropist he was involved in both Jewish and non-Jewish organisations, notably holding the function of president of the Communauté israélite de Bruxelles (1884-1921) and of the Central Jewish Consistory of Belgium (CCIB)(1921-1929), and of vice president of Ezra. His son Maurice Richard Manuel (1877-1939), a talented zoologist, lectured at the ULB. Franz Moses’ second son, Jules Georges René (1881-1961), succeeded his father. He was active in various enterprises and organisations. He was also involved in the organised Jewish community, notably as vice president of the CCIB and president of the Office central israélite de Secours (OCIS). Paul Louis Philippson (1910-1978), Maurice’s son, continued the family’s banking activities, after having fought in the liberation campaign as an officer in the British army. He too was active in Jewish institutions, notably as president of the retirement home l’Heureux Séjour, of the Caisse de Prêts et de Crédit, the AIVG-SSJ, the CIB (1945-1962), the CCIB (1962), State of Israel Bonds in Belgium and the Chamber of Commerce Belgium-Luxembourg-Israel.
