The paper and compute database are complementary. Together they form a census of existing films concerning Judaism, Jewish themes, films produced in Israel and/or by a Jewish director. All types of films are included, feature films as well as documentaries etc. The series of paper files include newspaper clippings, leaflets, programs, movie reviews, photographs, interviews with actors, producers and directors, etc.
Administrative/biographical history:
The Institut de la Mémoire Audio-visuelle Juive (IMAJ) was founded in Brussels in 1984, following the creation of a similar institution in Paris a year earlier. Founding members were Paul Danblon, Gyora Glupczynski, Béatrice Godlewicz, Baron Georges Schnek and Simone Susskind. The objective of the institution is to provide schools and teachers with Jewish films and information regarding Judaism for the purpose of combating stereotypes, negationism and antisemitism. IMAJ Brussels took flight as an association thanks to a grant from the Communauté française (the French-speaking Community of Belgium). At present, the IMAJ has achieved its goal. The institution manages its own database – 5000 titles have been identified and hundreds of video tapes and DVDs are available for on-site consultation or loan. In addition, IMAJ organised numerous film screenings and cultural events, and supports the production of new films. (http://www.imaj.be.)
