Scope and content:
In this fonds we find archival material and documentation collected by Louis Davids and used by the editors of the Belgisch Israëlitisch Weekblad. We mainly find documentation (press clippings, excerpts from articles from magazines, brochures, etc.) and to a lesser extent archival documents (incl. correspondence, circulars, lists of subscribers, drafts of articles, notes, etc.). The documentation is for the most part assembled in alphabetically arranged subject files. We find documentation files concerning Jewish holidays (Hanukkah, Rosh Hashana, Purim), individuals and general themes concerning the Jewish population in Belgium, but also regarding specific subjects such as Auschwitz, the ‘Carmel’ in Auschwitz, the persecution of the Jews, Jewish partisans, the synagogue in Zaventem, antisemitism, Vlaams Blok, amnesty, the war in Lebanon (1982), the terrorist attack against Agoedath Israël on 27 July 1980, the PLO, the Arabisch Europese Liga, Israeli independence day, and others. We also note ca. 10 envelopes containing many photographs from the 1960s-1990s. They depict lectures, press conferences, ceremonies, meetings and various events at which the reporters of the BIW were present as well as Jewish individuals and the Jewish daily and religious life in Antwerp. There are also personal photographs of Louis Davids and his family. Lastly we point out a virtually complete series (at least for the period 1963-2006) of bound issues of the Belgisch Israëlitisch Weekblad.
Administrative/biographical history:
For over 50 years the Belgisch Israëlitisch Weekblad (BIW), created in 1954, was seen as the voice of the Jewish communities in Flanders and in the Antwerp communities in particular. The weekly was often identified with its founder and editor in chief Louis Davids (1928-2015), who became a much sought-after commentator on Judaism and the Jewish population in Flanders. In the early 2000s the BIW faced financial difficulties and its survival became increasingly uncertain. The last issue appeared in December 2006. The weekly was succeeded by the monthly Joods Actueel, led by Davids’ daughter Terry Davids (director) and his grandson Michael Freilich (editor in chief). (http://www.joodsactueel.be)
