Administrative/biographical history:
The Arbeter Ring exists in different countries; in the United States it is called Workmen’s Circle. The organisation was created in 1929 by militants of the Bund. The Arbeter Ring was active in the domain of mutual societies, social, cultural and educational societies, while the Bund was devoted to politics. The association promoted values associated with Yiddish culture, and was committed to social justice and the defence of the rights of immigrants. In Belgium, this Bundist association founded the holiday camp Les Amis des Enfants (Kinderfraynd), affiliated with the Centrale d’Œuvres sociales juives since 1955. Les Amis des Enfants organised Yiddish classes as well as courses of Jewish history and literature. The children were sent to Villa Johanna in Middelkerke on the Belgian coast.
