Scope and content:: This fonds consists of a selection of documents from the archives of the ERR regarding Belgium. The originals are still located in the Central State Archives in Kiev. We mainly point out the series of periodical reports (daily, weekly and/or monthly reports) on the operations of the ERR. They contain information on i.a. house searches in the buildings of Jewish organisations and the confiscation of archives, art and cultural objects.

Archival history:: The archives of the ERR were confiscated by the Red Army, to be preserved in the Soviet Union.

Administrative/biographical history:: The Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg led by Nazi ideologist Alfred Rosenberg was, from July 1940, mainly responsible for the detection and confiscation of archives, artefacts and cultural objects that were judged to be of value to Germany and/or that belonged to Jewish and anti-Nazi individuals and organisations. The ultimate goal was the creation of a ‘super-university’, the Hohe Schule, where the ideological enemies of Nazism could be studied. The Belgian section or Hauptarbeitsgruppe Belgien was led by Professor Hans Ebeling and was headquartered at Kasteleinstraat 32 in Elsene (Brussels). Apart from political organisations, the organisation also visited many Jewish individuals and institutions, such as synagogues and Zionist associations. By 1943, the ideological ‘steering’ of occupied Belgium – with or without collaborationist organisations such as REX, DeVlag, VNV, and the Amis du Grand Reich allemande – played an increasingly important role in the mission of the ERR. The same goes for the study of seized documents, in order to use them in Nazi propaganda. In reality, cooperation with the collaborationist movements and the services of the German Military Administration did not run smoothly. In September 1944 the ERR was forced to cease its activities due to the advancing Allied forces. (D.
