Archival history:
This collection of announcements, notices, orders and dispositions issued by German occupation authorities with respect to the Jews, including posters printed in the ghettoes on the orders of Nazi authorities, was formed thanks to the endeavours of the Central Jewish Historical Commission. The resource was made part of the Jewish Historical Institute Archive in 1947. The notices signed by the Superior of the Jewish Elders in the Łódź Ghetto and by the Municipal Starost of Krakow have been excluded from of these institutions’ collections of records. The collection has also absorbed notices or announcements offered through donation or purchase.
Administrative/biographical history:
This collection comprises documents issued by various institutions and illustrates primarily the increase and accumulation of anti-Jewish restrictions and repressive measures, such as bans on using some streets in cities and towns, curfews, compulsory armbands, formation of ghettoes, obligatory registration for coerced labour and preventive vaccinations, calls for handing over property or belongings, property confiscations, food rationing and calls for displacement. The announcements and notices featured show the ways in which the occupational institutions, both German and Jewish, functioned in larger and smaller cities, and what their roles were.
