Scope and content:
The collection contains documents and registers from 1849 to 1865. The Imperial Directorate was divided into districts (Bezirke) and further into counties (Kreise). This collection contains the records of the Sibiu county directorate, which was charged with overseeing and assisting local and municipal police and military forces. The collection consists of registers, indexes and documents, arranged topically according to the functions they record, which mirror the functions of the police directorate overall: census of the population, maintaining public order, registration of foreigners, issue and validation of passports, registering of arrestees and detainees and problems of public morality. In many cases the documents recorded in the indexes and registers (1850-64) are extant and may be requested by year and document number, although not all of the documents have survived. For examples of material related to the Jewish population which may be found within the collection, see the entry for this collection at http://jbat.lbi.org/, subfield ‘contains’, and click on any link.
