Archival history:
The records were incorporated into the archives of the Jewish Museum in Prague during the Second World War as part of shipments of material from Jewish religious communities that had been disbanded.
Administrative/biographical history:
The earliest reference to Jewish settlement in Jihlava dates from 1249. Jews were expelled in the 14th century, and it was not until 1848 that individual Jewish families were allowed to live there again. A modern-day religious community existed from about 1858 onwards. The community expanded in 1938, when it incorporated the area of the Jewish Religious Community of Brtnice. It was disbanded by the Nazis during the Second World War but subsequently resumed its activities.
