Scope and content:
The fonds contains exercise books with notes made by Feigl while in Great Britain and correspondence between the gallery owner Hugo Feigl (Bedřich's brother) and the painter Oskar Kokoschka. It also contains exhibition catalogues and leaflets.
Archival history:
The exercise books were donated to the Jewish Museum in Prague by the painter's niece, Marion Feigl, in 2007; the correspondence between Hugo Feigl and Oskar Kokoschka was donated in 2014 and 2015.
Administrative/biographical history:
The painter, graphic artist and illustrator Bedřich (Friedrich) Feigl was born in Prague on 6 March 1884. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague before going on to study in Antwerp and Paris. He was the co-founder of the art group Osma, along with Emil Filla, Bohumil Kubišta, Arnošt Procházka, Willy Novak, Otakar Kubín and other fellow students. In the 1920s and 30s he regularly exhibited in Prague. His artwork often reflected the Jewish tradition and biblical themes. In 1939 he emigrated with his wife Margareta to London, where he contributed to the artistic life and held regular exhibitions. He died in London on 17 December 1965.
