Scope and content:
The fonds contains minutes of meetings, material relating to ritual matters (matzah distribution, religious contributions etc.), personnel and salary records, a number of financial registers, and documents relating to Jewish cemeteries (plans, memorial designs, death registers, etc).
Archival history:
The fonds was transferred to the archives of the Jewish Museum in Prague from the Jewish Community of Ostrava in March 2009.
Administrative/biographical history:
The Jewish Religious Community of Ostrava was in existence from the second half of the 19th century. It was disbanded during the Nazi Occupation but resumed its activities in 1945. Until 1960 it gradually assumed authority over the whole of North Moravia and Silesia. In 1989 it became the Jewish Community of Ostrava with authority over the Jewish communities in the districts of Frýdek-Místek, Karviná, Nový Jičín, Opava, Ostrava and Vsetín. The Jewish Community of Ostrava is still in existence.
