Archival history:
The records came to the archives of the Jewish Museum in Prague during the Second World War as part of shipments of material from Jewish communities and organisations that had been disbanded.
Administrative/biographical history:
The Old-New Synagogue dates from the end of the 13th century and is the oldest surviving building in Prague's Jewish Town. It was originally called the New or Great Synagogue, but it was not until the establishment of other synagogues in the ghetto at the end of the 16th century that it became known as the Old-New (Altneuschul). In 1883 the building underwent major restoration work under the supervision of architect Joseph Mocker. It was restored several times in the 20th century. It has been the main place of worship of the Prague Jewish community for more than 700 years.
