Archival history:
The records came to the archives of the Jewish Museum in Prague during the Second World War as part of shipments of material from Jewish communities and organisations that had been disbanded. The association’s records merge with those of the Spanish Synagogue.
Administrative/biographical history:
The Spanish Synagogue was built in 1868 as the temple of the Association for Regulated Worship among the Israelites on the site of the Altshul (the oldest synagogue in Prague, which was used by a Jewish community that emerged in the 12th century). Its interior decoration from 1880–1883 features the then fashionable Moorish style, the use of which led to the name “the Spanish Synagogue”. The synagogue was used as a warehouse during the Second World War. It was restored in the 1950s and in 1997–1998. It was used by the Jewish Museum in Prague as a depository and exhibition venue.
