Scope and content:
This collection contains the surviving fragments of the records of the Ungvár Branch of the 8th Gendarmerie District of Kassa/Kosice from the Second World War, mostly miscellaneous financial records. While the documents are not directly Jewish-related, they provide an insight into the economic and administrative activities of the Royal Hungarian Gendarmerie, one of the major agents of anti-Jewish policies, the ghettoisation and deportation during the Holocaust in Hungary.
Archival history:
The records of the Royal Hungarian Gendarmerie were destroyed at the very end of WWII, with very few exceptions, including a fragment of the wartime records created by the Finance Office at the Ungvár Branch of the 8th Gendarmerie District of Kassa. The material was taken to Budapest after the end of the war and handed over to the Hungarian National Archives in the early 1950s.
Administrative/biographical history:
Following the re-annexation of the Upper Province and Carpatho-Ruthenia, which Hungary gained from dismembered Czechoslovakia in 1938 and 1939, a new gendarmerie (and army) district was formed in this territory, with headquarters in Kassa/Kosice. Gendarmerie districts were divided into branches (osztály), one of which was located in Ungvár/Uzhorod.
