The collection holds the records of the Nagykőrös Israelite Women's Charitable Society from its establishment in 1895 to its liquidation in the spring of 1944. Only fragments of the documentation survived, which mostly concern financial and administrative matters, including the statutes from 1895, various founding charters from the early years of the existence of the organisation, depositor’s book and bonds from the years 1907-1925, cashier’s book, cashier’s documents a and seal from the pre-Holocaust period (1934-1944), and the minutes of the last meetings of the Society from 1944.
Archival history:
The records of the Nagykőrös Israelite Women's Charitable Society were probably taken over in the 1950s by the Nagykőrös branch of the Pest County Archives. The material was rearranged and described in its present form in 1978.
Administrative/biographical history:
Women's Charitable Societies were established by virtually every major Jewish community in modern Hungary in order to provide the poor and the families in need with social aid and support. Besides, these societies were important agents of local social, religious and cultural life. The Nagykőrös Israelite Women's Charitable Society was officially founded in 1895 and dissolved right before the ghettoisation and deportation of the Nagykőrös Jews in April 1944. Most of the community members perished in the Holocaust.
