Scope and content:
The collection of the records of the town council is of key importance to explore and describe the history of the Cegléd Jewish community from the establishment of the first Jewish institutions in 1848-1850 until 1872. From this time onwards, most of the relevant files can be found in the records of the Mayor’s Office, although the town council existed until 1929. The most important Jewish-related files are held in the following provenance groups:

V.42. a. Protocols, 1848-1871. The material includes requests for settlement (letelepedési kérelem) and for exemption from paying the residence tax (lakhatási díj) of Jewish heads of families, as well as the correspondence of the town council with the superior authorities pertaining to the Jewish community and the settlement of Jews. The records related to Jews can be located and identified by the alphabetical indexes.

V.42. c/1. Administrative records, 1848-1871. This part of the collection includes, but is not limited to, contracts with Jewish shop- and inn keepers, requests and petitions by leaseholders and other individuals to pay out (megváltás) military quartering, requests for trade and sales permits, leases of market tents, matters of residence permits and naturalisation, matters of violations of economic regulations, warrants of caption, exemption from military service and other duties, extabulatio and intabulatio (be- és kitáblázások) and other financial transactions, and magyarisation of names. Furthermore, the collection holds several records concerning Jewish communities, including the establishment of Jewish schools and organisations, appointments of community officials, settlement of Jewish individuals, lease matters of pubs and butcheries, matters concerning community tax and school taxes, elections of representatives, accounts of social organizations and schools, submissions of registers of births, marriages and deaths, requests for school and social aid, organization of charitable events and many other matters.

V.42. f/1-3. This part of the collection includes conscriptions of the inhabitants by real estate owners, heads of families and street numbers from the years 1853-1867.

V.42. g/1-3. Conscriptions of recruits (állítási lajstromok) and men of military age (hadkötelesek) from the years 1852-1871. Fasc. 11 holds leave permits (szabadságlevelek).

V.42. h. Protocols of market prices, 1850-1851.
Archival history:
The records of the Town Council were taken over by the Mayor’s Office in the 1870s and by its successor, the City Council of Cegléd in 1950. The City Council handed over the collection of the Council of the Town of Cegléd in 1987 to the Nagykőrös branch of the Pest County Archives.
Administrative/biographical history:
The first meeting of the Town Council of Cegléd in the post-feudal era is dated 8 January 1848. Supervised by the county general assembly (közgyűlés) until 1853, by the municipal council (községtanács) between 1854-1860 (in the period of restricted municipal autonomy) and by the county Council of representatives (képviselőtestület) after 1861, the Town Council was the main executive body in the social, economic, personal, financial and organisational matters of the city and its vicinity. The head of the Council was the mayor, appointed by the prefect before 1861 and elected by the council of representatives after 1861. From 1872 onwards, the council was put under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Committee and many functions were taken by the mayor’s office.

System of arrangement:
The collection is divided into eight provenance groups, numbered V.42. a-h., the most relevant of which are the Protocols of the town council meetings (V.42. a.), Administrative records (V. 42. c.) and Conscriptions (civil and military, V. 42. f-g.). The records are mostly arranged by basic numbers, re-started each year. The protocols of the town council meetings are arranged chronologically, but the numbers of decisions are not continuous and in some cases the protocols do not follow chronological order.
Finding aids:
Original alphabetical indexes and registries are available for the collection.
