- Archival history:
- This was opened in December 1913 as a natural history museum. Its basis was E. P. Frantsov’s personal collection of natural-history materials, S. I. Gaiduchenko’s personal collection of archeological materials, etc. The founding of the museum was directly connected with the appearance in Nikolaev of the Antiquities Office of the Black Sea Hydrographic Map Depot in 1803. Currently the museum also includes several standalone departments: the Museum of the Underground and Partisan Movement in the Nikolaev Region during the Great Fatherland War of 1941-44; the Naval and Shipbuilding Museum; the A. V. Suvorov Military History Museum in the city of Ochakov; etc. The collection numbers some 135,000 exhibit items.
